“BERENICE” FILM SET

Hand Drafting, Production Design

Solo Project

SCAD | Winter 2024

Based on the Edgar Allen Poe story “Berenice”, this library chamber has a real bite to it.

Final Drafting Plate

For this project I was tasked with reading and analyzing Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “Berenice” and then designing a film set based on one of the settings in the story. I chose the library, mixing victorian and gothic interior aesthetics to show that more than a few generations had lived in this house. The story follows the main characters’ proclivity for obsession moving from literature to the teeth of his cousin-wife’s teeth. I illustrate this in the design by adding allusions to teeth, from the dentil molding, to the bookshelves, to the gothic window casting light on the main character.

This was my first time hand drafting a set. The project had a one week turnaround time from start to finish.
